Word of the Week: Inner Wisdom
When I sit down to write this newsletter, sometimes I have zero ideas and sometimes I have so many ideas I don’t know what to do with. How do I eventually decide what to write? I draw a tarot card!
For those of you who are thinking “Wow, she’s really gone off the deep end,” hear me out. I used to get really overwhelmed by decisions. I would agonize over things as simple as which ice cream flavor to order. I would create massive pro/con lists whenever I was deciding a big investment. I would turn to Andrew, my parents, friends, and bosses to tell me what my next career move should be. By creating a pattern of relying on outside advice when it came to decision-making, I had convinced myself that other people knew how I should live my life better than me.
When I started to play around with tarot, I was amazed by how much it helped me access my own inner wisdom. Suddenly, I started to be able to ask myself the questions I used to ask other people! It was the most liberating feeling. The best part was bypassing the icky feelings I got whenever I asked someone for their opinion and received a response that confused me even more.
See, the thing is, we have all the answers we need inside of us. Even though society has told women for years that their intuition can’t be trusted, I am of the philosophy that no one is more qualified to give you advice than you. Since we’ve had a lifetime of conditioning that tells us otherwise, I’ve found tarot to be helpful in reconnecting with the part of ourselves that already knows what to do. I don’t use the cards at all like “fortune-telling” (which, btw, is a total misrepresentation of tarot). Instead, I use them as a tool for self-inquiry and as a way to turn inward (instead of outward) when I am in need of some guidance.
Nowadays, I carry around a tarot deck with me almost everywhere I go. I use them in my business. I take them on vacation. I bring them to friend’s houses. Here are some of my favorite questions I like to ask:
Learning to trust my own inner wisdom through tarot instead of turning to other people for advice has been one of the biggest game-changers in my self-empowerment journey. It’s improved my relationships, it’s boosted my self-confidence, and it’s given me a lot of energy and time back.
Plus, tarot just makes everything more fun and magical. And you can never have enough fun and magic in your life.
Ask Yourself: When making a decision, do you tend to seek guidance from others or do you turn inward and follow your intuition? What tools help you to tap into your inner wisdom?
Weekly Mantra: I have all the answers I need inside of me.
When in Doubt, Jam It Out! Surround Me by LEON (Be sure to follow the Spotify playlist called “Jam it Out with Elizabeth” to stay up-to-date with the weekly jams 🎵)
Things I am Loving: This video clip of kids dancing is sparking a LOT of joy. Love me some collective effervescence.
Bonus: Who here is worried about climate change? (hellooooo everyone!) I wrote a totally different kind of piece for Talkspace recently called “Is “Climate Despair” Making People Depressed?” Read on to learn:
Sending hugs for an introspective week!
P.S. Don’t forget! I started a Dear Abby/Dear Sugar-style advice column (and/or podcast!) called Notes from Camp. Think of it like you are writing your BFF a note from camp. Tell me your deepest fears, biggest dreams, soul-whispers, and heartbreaks…and I will respond with as much honesty, compassion, and humanness as I would my BFF. I will be taking submissions on a rolling basis (prioritizing Monday Vibes community members) and compiling responses over the next few weeks…and we will go from there!! Send your note here.
